                  Valley of Fear
The next morning, McMurdo with his beloved girl, the landlord's daughter left the dangerous place. Ten days later they got married. McGinty and other eight persons were sentenced to death by hanging. But others, including Baldwin, were imprisoned for ten years and dismissed. They made a vow to revenge for their peers. McMurdo encountered danger for times. He had to keep moving. Before long, his wife died. Later McMurdo moved to a valley where few people lived. He changed his name to Douglas and ran a mine with Barker, an English man. But soon the avenger traced him there. Douglas had to move to England. There he married his present wife and lived a gentleman life for five years. He had never thought the killer showed up again. So happened the act as at the beginning of the story.
The local court dismissed Douglas for killing in self-defense. However, several days later Douglas died in a ship heading to South Africa. Nobody saw how he died. On receiving the telegram, Holmes knew somebody from the Scowrers did it. He looked up into the sky and murmured, "Give me more time, I will defeat the infernal Scowrers!"
